About Present Director

Director Rangakarmee, Mrs. Tripty Mitra:

“Theatre means adaan-pradaan, togetherness. I dream of a place where all theatre groups and all cultural groups can come together and work. Usha-di too thought like this, hence, the Studio Theatre at Rangakarmee was formed. As Usha Ganguli desired to do, now we will continue to do the work of Studio Theatre with the help of our friends of Rangakarmee in West Bengal and all over India,” says Mrs. Tripty Mitra on being appointed director (2020-2021). Taking forward the legacy, once held in the resilient hands of (late) Mrs. Usha Ganguli, founder of the thought-provoking theatre repertoire Rangakarmee.

Early Years in Theatre / Rangakarmee

Tripty has been an active theatre actor, worker and administrator. In the field of theatre and performance Mrs. Tripty Mitra is better known as Rani Mitra.

Around the end-1981, Rani joined the Hindi theater group Rangakarmee founded by Mrs. Usha Ganguli. Here, she forayed in Hindi plays for the first time. Rani acted in ‘Maa’ directed by M.K. Raina where she played multiple roles as second lady – also a first for her. She played the character of Aai in ‘Gudiya Ghar’ directed by Tripti Mitra. In ‘Parichay’ directed by Rudra Prosad Sengupta, character of a Bengali lady married in a Hindustani (non-Bengali) family. Rani remained in Rangakarmee for three years and was away for 20 years. Though, she was always invited by Usha Ganguli for Rangakarmee shows and events.

Rani returned to join Rangakarmee in 2004 (to present), as an actor and repertoire worker. She acted in Rangakarmee’s ‘Sarhad paar Manto’ in 2005, ‘Manto aur Manto’ and ‘Khela Gaari’ in 2007. She worked in the repeat productions of Rangakarmee’s outstanding plays ‘Rudaali’, ‘Kaashinama’, ‘Manasi’ and all the productions 2004 onwards.

Rani served as Secretary of Rangakarmee for two terms – 2017-2018 and 2018-2019. She was assistant to Mrs. Usha Ganguli in the technical workshop organised by National School of Drama at Rangakarmee’s Studio Theatre in Kolkata where Rani was an assistant director. In 2020-2021, Rani Mitra was selected Director of Rangakarmee, after the sudden demise of Mrs. Usha Ganguli in April 2020.
