About Rangakarmee

Rangakarmee is a tradition, a culture, a movement. The historical repertoire founded by Smt. Usha Ganguli and launched in January 1976 in Kolkata, continues to spearhead the Hindi theatre space in Kolkata. Rangakarmee, under the aegis of proficient theatre personality Usha Ganguli, embarked on a mission to break all barriers and reach out to the audience of West Bengal, pan-India and beyond boundaries. To spread Rangakarmee’s message, Usha Ganguli created a unique language and style of communication, solely dependent on theatre, that cut across languages spoken by different communities in India and worldwide.

Through its timeless narratives and productions, Rangakarmee has successfully exploited the powerful medium of theatre. The plays, rich in literature deftly raise its voice against long prevailing oppression – Human Rights violations – inflicted by the rudimentary society mindset on women, children, old, poor and the marginalised, lack of political will, apathy and issues affecting humans at large. To name a few major productions by Rangakarmee, Mahabhoj, Lok-Katha, Holi, Court Martial, Rudali, Khoj, Beti Aayee, Maiyyat, Mukti, Antaryatra, Kashinama, Badnam Manto, Chandalika, Hum Mukhtara, and Atmaj among others. The success of Rangakarmee’s mission is felt in the inspiring accolades it receives from theatre audiences wherever it performs.

In addition, Rangakarmee is keenly involved in initiatives that aim to foster and promote theatre and culture in its totality. Annual theatre festival Samanvay aims to promote varied cultural and art forms of India. The Rangakarmee Studio Theatre provides a platform for experimental performances, workshops, training programmes and seminars with the view to inspire interest in theatre.
